Vacancy Meijers Committee – Internship (6 months, 3 days a week)

Are you curious about EU decision-making processes and the areas of law under the EU’s jurisdiction? Do you want to deepen your knowledge of European law, specifically the rule of law and EU fundamental rights protection? If you enjoy variety and intellectual challenges and want to learn the inner workings of a legal expert think-tank, apply for an internship at the Meijers Committee.

The Meijers Commission is a unique group of, academics, judges and lawyers in the Netherlands. We have different subcommittees that conduct research and advice on EU criminal, migration, asylum, privacy, non-discrimination and institutional law, as well as on the EU rule of law and agencies. The Meijers Committee informs EU institutions and both houses of the Dutch Parliament about the impact of European legislative developments. In this way, we provide policymakers and politicians with the necessary research and resources to influence the legislative process in Brussels. By responding early and maintaining contact with legislative institutions, particularly in Brussels and The Hague, the Meijers Committee has made an important contribution to EU legislation and policy over the past two decades.

The Meijers Committee is financially supported by several foundations and organisations. The day-to-day activities of the Committee are carried out by the executive secretary. In addition to that, a project officer is involved in activities related to the Rule of Law project.

Your tasks as an intern of the Meijers Committee:

– Conducting legal and policy research and writing draft opinions on EU and national legislative proposals, depending on your specific interest and the EU’s political agenda;
– assisting in the preparation of Committee meetings;
– participating in the organisation of conferences;
– keeping track of current events at the Union and national levels;
– liaising with stakeholders in The Hague and Brussels;
– assisting the executive secretary and the project officer in their work.

Your profile:

– master’s student at a Dutch university (NB international students are welcome to apply), with knowledge of and great interest in European Union law and International human rights law;
– good command of the English language is required, including legal terminology. A good command of the Dutch language would be preferable. Knowledge of another EU language is a plus;
– affinity with and basic knowledge of the EU decision-making process and at least one of the areas of expertise of the Meijers Committee (i.e., rule of law, EU agencies, migration, asylum, criminal, institutional, privacy, non-discrimination law);
– strong research and editing skills and good communication skills;
– the ability to work independently, take responsibility and function as a sparring partner for the executive secretary and the project officer.

The duration of the internship can be determined in consultation but is a minimum of four and a maximum of six months for three days a week. The internship will start (preferably) at the beginning of September 2024.
