Meijers Committee comment on the Digital Omnibus proposals

This comment raises several fundamental rights concerns arising from the Digital Omnibus proposals. Despite the significant impact these amendments would have on privacy and data protection, they were introduced without the necessary impact assessment.

The comment highlights four core issues: the proposed redefinition of personal data, new legal bases for AI development, weakened safeguards for sensitive data, and restrictions on data subject rights. These changes risk undermining established standards under EU law.

Given the breadth of these implications, the Meijers Committee urges the legislators to carry out a full fundamental rights impact assessment and to remove the proposed amendments affecting the definition of personal data, the grounds for AI development, the handling of sensitive data, and the exercise of data subject rights.
