Comments on the Returns Directive

This comment concerns the proposal for a Directive on common standards and procedures in Member States for returning illegally staying third-country nationals (recast), COM(2018) 634 final. The comment highlights a number of problematic human rights aspects of the proposal, especially relating to the right to liberty and the right to an effective remedy. The Meijers Committee also makes observations on the coherence between the proposal and other EU instruments, including the proposal for an Asylum Procedures Regulation.
